Crêpes have been around for many centuries. They evolved from
being traditional peasant food of the people of Southern France,
and worked their way through the courts of France, Germany and
Austria to most every fancy restaurant throughout the world.
People have initially topped them with sugar alone. Then they had
topped them with chocolate and fruits to create a totally
indulging treat. Crêpes are easy to combine with either sweet or
salty condiments. You can make a simple cheese and ham crêpe or
invent the most complex recipe. Some smother it in 'béchamel'
others like it as simple as possible, with just honey or sugar. It
works well with ice cream or whipped cream, raisins or mangos,
sausage or mushrooms. Nowadays, you will find restaurants that
serve a variety of savory crêpes as well as sweet ones, filled
with all kinds of ingredients. |
